Adopted at Icelandic Group's Board meeting on January 22nd 1998
Icelandic Group is a company selling seafood in international markets. It has offices in Iceland, and several of its principal markets, and also owns secondary processing facilities in the USA, UK, France, Denmark and Germany. The company's customers are buyers of seafood in all the major markets world-wide. Its seafood producers are independent companies in Iceland and abroad but historically the company's main sources are based on Icelandic resources. In formulating its principles, Icelandic Group has given careful note to the concerns of its customers world-wide and found them to a large extent to be in accordance with the company's own interests. Furthermore, Icelandic Group has studied all relevant issues of Agenda 21 - the Global Plan of Action for Sustainable Development, adopted at the UN conference in Rio De Janeiro in 1992.
The environmental principles of Icelandic Group reflect these considerations, and they are an inherent part of the overall policy of the company, to do business in a responsible manner in every way possible, so that it will always be well respected for its products and services.
Discerning buyers of seafood attach increasing importance to sustainable fisheries, responsible fishing operations, and that the fishery management system is founded on scientific assessment and advice. They greatly emphasise the wholesomeness of the products, quality assurance throughout processing, and uniform high quality standards. In some countries, the disposal or reprocessing of packaging material, is subject to special regulations, and Icelandic Group customers therefore require packaging to meet the relevant specifications.
Fishery Management and Sustainable Fisheries
In laying down its principles for fishing and fishery management, Icelandic Group takes note of the FAO Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries (1995), and the international laws and regulations, which the Icelandic government has ratified.
Icelandic Group endeavours to base its business on the sale of products from stocks of fish, utilised in a sustainable and responsible manner, by means of a proper fishery management system. This shall be based on scientific assessment, and administered by governmental or inter-governmental bodies. Icelandic Group will collect data to the effect that the part of its business, which is based on international sources, also conforms to these considerations, while taking into account the different fishery management systems in many parts of the world.
Icelandic Group will take special care not to encourage production, nor sell products of endangered species. It will not sell products of protected species as specified by scientists, and by the legislation of nations, and the international organisations, to which Iceland is a party. This applies to fishing within the Icelandic EEZ, in international waters, and in areas under the jurisdiction of other nations.
Responsible fishing, and fish processing, also implies full utilisation of the catch, which may be processed in an economically viable manner, including utilisation of by-catch and by-products. Icelandic Group will continue to undertake the sale of these products, and will encourage full processing of the catch.
Icelandic Group will also support efforts to increase the processing of products for human consumption, as far as circumstances will permit.
Wholesomeness of Products
An important part of Icelandic Group's activities is to ensure that fish products sold by the company are wholesome, i.e. have a normal nutritional value, and are free from pollution, caused by microbial or chemical contamination.
The wholesomeness of seafood products is best secured by means of a clean marine environment and good manufacturing practices, which include correct sanitation procedures in handling and processing and a thorough understanding of the factors which may cause contamination of the product.
Icelandic Group has access to, and utilises, the latest scientific data concerning the condition of the Icelandic fishing grounds, and the wholesomeness of seafood products, with regard to pollution by heavy metals, radioactive substances and persistent organic pollutants.
All the scientific data indicates that Icelandic fishing grounds are practically free from pollution by industrial waste, primarily due to their geographical location, the country's small population, and the nature of its major industries.
Icelandic Group is on guard against circumstances that threaten the purity of fishing areas and thereby the wholesomeness of the fish products and for that purpose keeps abreast of the work of Icelandic scientists and environmental specialists.
Icelandic Group emphasises that products sold by the company meet its uniform quality standards, as detailed in the company's product specifications. Icelandic Group's quality system also incorporates specifications for good manufacturing practices, which are intended to prevent contamination by foreign material, as well as chemical or microbial pollution.
All Icelandic producers for Icelandic Group have installed quality assurance systems, based on Hazards Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) principles.
Appropriate use of packaging material
Icelandic Group aims at an economical and appropriate use of packaging material with respect to the quantity and properties of packaging material.
Packaging material is designed and selected for the purpose of protecting the goods and ensuring storage stability but should not be excessive for its function.
Reprocessable packaging material is given preference as far as possible.
